Lady Titans falter early, recover late

Lady Titans falter early, recover late

The GBS varsity girls volleyball team ended their conference season with a win over Evanston Oct. 18, placing them in 3rd in the CSL rankings. The Lady Titans finished their 2012 campaign with an overall record of 16-18.

South started the regional playoffs with a win over Waukegan, but the team lost to Lake Zurich in the following match, which brought their season to a close.

According to Senior Teigan Flaws, the team had a shaky start, but they improved over the course of the season.

“I think [our season went] pretty well, […] we hit a couple of rough patches, but we [came out really strong],” Flaws said.

Head coach Katie Hoover noted how her team worked late to key-in on some weaknesses.

“I think in [the last] few weeks, [the team] worked on defensive anticipation, moving to the ball, and serving to specific zones,” Hoover said.

Captain Katie Dwyer felt that though New Trier was still a significant opponent, Evanston was South’s team to beat.

“Evanston was the team that we find us competing with the most because were so evenly matched with them,” Dwyer said.

The girls lost to the Wildcats last year. But on the team’s Senior Night Oct. 19, they beat Evanston in their last conference match of the season with the home court advantage.

According to head coach Hoover, everyone contributed to the win, but it was the seniors who made it all happen.

“It was so exciting to watch all of the pieces come together,” Hoover said. “It was nice to pull out that last victory on our home floor because it really showed that we were working as a team towards improvement and we weren’t going to give up.”

After they had a bad moment during the season, they had a hard time recovering from it,  like missing digs, according to senior Kiva Talty.

“Throughout the season, we began to trust in our playing and trust in the fact that we can win,” Talty said. “Our problem was that we played [volleyball] as a mind game.”

The girls were at the top of their game and ready for action when the playoffs came around, according to Hoover.

“The girls played the best volleyball they played all season, and there’s no better time than to do it at the end,” Hoover said.

Senior captain Rachel Tiedmann expressed her sentiments on the season coming to an end but feels proud of what her team was able to accomplish.

“We’re really disappointed to see our season end so soon, but it was a really great season,” Tiedmann said.
