A pivotal milestone was accomplished by senior Townsend Walter, co-captain of Varsity Girls’ Lacrosse, as she scored her 100th career goal and 50th career assist in the same game. This personal record demonstrates her hard work throughout her lacrosse career, Walter said.
Walter began playing as an attacker in second grade and has continued for 11 years, she said. She played for Team One Lacrosse Club until freshman year. Walter then moved to True Lacrosse Club sophomore year, while playing on South’s varsity team, she said. Now, as a captain, Walter continues improving while also encouraging her teammates to improve, Nicole Pullano, Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse Head Coach, said.
“Walter has grown into a strong leader and a key part of our offense,” Pullano said. “She helps make the players around her better, which makes this record meaningful for our entire program.”
Her career goal and assist record displays her work ethic and constant motivation from her teammates, Walter said. As her final season concludes, Walter aims to be the best version of herself and reach her full potential, especially since she will not play lacrosse in college. Deciding not to play in college was difficult for Walter, but she hopes to continue playing lacrosse in the future through club or as a hobby, she said.
“‘I am proud of myself because I have always had the goal of making a big amplishment in lacrosse when I got to high school,” Walter said. “It was definetly a hard decision to not play in college, but I ultimately decided that I wanted to have a normal college experience without that added stress.”
According to senior Emerson Tuvell, co-captain of Varsity Girls’ Lacrosse, Walter is not only a strong scorer, but also a skilled playmaker. She consistently balances finishing plays while making opportunities for her teammates, Tuvell said. While reaching 100 career points showcases her scoring abilities, her 50 assists display her commitment to involving her teammates, she said.
“Her passes are always perfectly placed and she has incredible visions and high lacrosse IQ,” Tuvell said. “There’s no one else I would trust more with the ball in an important moment.”
Whenever Walter is not satisfied with a result, she consistently returns to a quote from the television show “Ted Lasso”: “Be a goldfish,” reminding her to stay mentally grounded at all times and to keep moving past her mistakes. Goldfish have a short memory span, so the quote is about not letting your mistakes affect your overall gameplay, and leaving them in the past, Walter said. Her team, and being able to meet new and amazing people through her sport is important to her, as the community helps her stay motivated, Walter said.
“I am constantly motivated by my coaches and my dad who are always there for me, so I want to make them proud,” Walter said. “This is my last season, so I want to continue pushing myself to be the best I can be.”
