Girls Flag Football has fallen just short in championship season after winning the conference championship and entering the playoffs as the number one seed, Thomas Godbout, Varsity Girls Flag Football Coach said.
South went into the championship conference undefeated with 16 wins, and they were awarded a Regional Championship title after beating Dundee Crown 38-0. Their post-season began October 5 against Vernon Hills and continued to play through the Sectional Semifinals first games on the 10. South hosted the sectional tournament October 10 and 13 and lost their first game to Schaumburg on the 10th.
The team has supported each other through hard games and tough wins, Senior Alexis Erickson said. They were awarded both Conference and Sectional Championship titles, Erickson said.
“I think the biggest challenge our team faced is going into the playoffs undefeated,” Erickson said. “While this can seem like a good thing it is also bad because the team had never experienced a loss and how devastating it can be. This could have hurt our motivation levels going into sectionals.”
The team made many resilient plays against opponents during their season demonstrating their passion and drive to win, Erickson said. The players showed up ready to work even on hard days, Erickson said.
“Even though we didn’t make it as far as we had hoped, I am still very proud of the team and so grateful to have gotten the opportunity to play with such amazing people,” Erickson said. “I think we had a lot of success this season and I am confident that the team will be able to continue their successes next season.”
