More than just a movie

How “the classics” have created timeless trends

My favorite part of  movies is  each person has unique interpretations of a film. The takeaways, inspiration, ideas, and tone movies create can all be understood differently by each person. But, the most memorable part about movies has always been the fashion.

Middle to late 20th Century cinema included not only some of the most famous actors of all time, but some of the most influential fashion choices. Stars like Audrey Hepburn, Meg Ryan, and Grace Kelly modeled the trendiest period of fashion that have withheld the test of time and are still represented in the fashion of today.

Different aspects of fashion started jumping out at me beginning in 7th grade when I started for the first time to pick out my  clothes and decide what I liked and disliked. In movies like When Harry Met Sally, Funny Face, and Pretty Woman, the characters are determined, lucky, and intelligent, while scenes of the French countryside and New York City streets complement them in the background. What always jumped out most though was how  the clothes seemed to have  personality of their own.

Growing up watching these movies, I always found myself looking up to Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca, or Grace Kelly in High Society whenever I needed a little bit of guidance, entranced by the strong            female leads and their even stronger fashion sense.

In an attempt to further embody the core of my beloved characters, I began to model my own outfits after them. I noticed how timeless and beautiful Audrey Hepburn’s Sabrina costumes turned out to be, almost seventy years later. Meg Ryan’s classic jeans and sweater combination is fit for any occasion, a set that has become a staple in my wardrobe.

Clothes always have a way of bringing out confidence in me. From buying a jacket like the one I saw in Julia Roberts’ Notting Hill or a new outfit modeled after the simple elegance emulated by Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face, fashion has always helped me be my best self.

Every outfit correlates to the score, story, or actresses. I have found that the style throughout these films is always comfortable, long lasting, and fit for many different occasions.

Movies will forever be responsible for inspiring the person I want to become and how I present myself, and that is something I will cherish forever.
