Spring Fling has grown to become one of South’s staple events for students and clubs due to its long standing legacy and accessibility to all, Dr. Mark Maranto, Assistant Principal of Student Activities, said.
Spring Fling is intended to be an outdoor festival celebrating the end of the school year, Maranto said. This Friday during all lunch blocks, 24 clubs will set up tables in the Autos Courtyard and fundraise by selling various products for students to purchase with cash or PayPal, Maranto said. In addition, South provides food trucks, games, and music for students to enjoy. Student Council plans Spring activities for the week leading up to Spring Fling, as well as activities during the event and custom stickers to hand out, Maranto said.
Clubs participate in Spring Fling by selling products to fundraise and promote involvement for their clubs, Maranto said.
“It [is] a good one-day fundraiser for [clubs] to make money for next school year, because at the end of the school year, clubs are left without [many] funds,” Maranto said.
One club participating in Spring Fling this year is Lumos, a charity club run by the Harry Potter Franchise that helps orphans throughout the world, junior Cailyn Durbin, Fundraising Coordinator, said. Durbin is excited for Lumos to have a bake sale at Spring Fling so they can finish off the school year with a final chance to fundraise. Durbin also appreciates that the event helps smaller clubs, like Lumos, get representation at South events.
“[Spring Fling] is always good for recruitment [and] making sure people know we exist,” Durbin said. “It gives smaller clubs an opportunity [to] get out there.”
Spring Fling is a great event because of how easy it is for students to attend, Maranto explained. Any and all students can go during one of their lunch blocks and any club can have a table, Maranto said. Even if students do not buy anything, they can still do activities and enjoy themselves, Maranto added.
“It is an easy win for [South] because it does [not] require students to come for anything after school,” Maranto said. “When it [is] a nice day, it [is] awesome [because] everybody is out in the courtyard having a good time.”
