With six games remaining, the women’s basketball team is looking to improve their current record of 8-13, according to head coach Steve Weissenstein.
According to senior captain Riley Dahiya, the beginning of the season was difficult on the team due to their struggles in the Schaumburg Thanksgiving Tournament, where they went 0-5.
“As the season goes on, we’re just going to keep getting better and better because we are so young, and we have so much learning experience to [use throughout the season],” Dahiya said.
More recently, the Titans lost by six points to New Trier. They are looking to better prepare themselves and come back even stronger for their second matchup against the Trevians this season, according to senior captain Carly Weinman.
“We were so close,” Weinman said. “[Next time] we want to take it to the next level and make it an actual victory. [We just needed] a few baskets here and there, maybe one more stop on defense and we would have gotten it.”
Although South took the fall to New Trier, Weissenstein said the Titans were quick to bounce back as Weinman and her sister, point guard Carie Weinman, made important plays to help the team beat Maine South for the second time this season in a 57-54 victory.
“It was probably our best game of the year,” Weissenstein said. “Carly hit two huge threes that helped us get over the top. It was a close game, and she just seemed to hit some threes at the right time. Her sister Carie made some nice plays too. It was a really good team game.”
Thus far this season, the Titans have become close on and off the court, according to Weissenstein.
“They all get along really well even though we have every class on our team,” Weissenstein said. “You cannot say, ‘The seniors just go over here, the juniors over here.’ You can tell they’re a team. They all like each other, they get along well, they play well together. As far as team chemistry goes, you can’t get better than this team.”
With the season approaching a close, the Titans are set for a few tough matchups in upcoming conference tournament, according to Weissenstein.
“We still have some strides to make to get to Evanston and New Trier, but those are the two top teams in our conference,” Weissenstein said. “We will probably end up playing one of those two teams in a Regional Final. We’ve got about three and a half weeks before that starts, and we just have to make those extra strides to get to their level.”
