From becoming a surgeon, working in a laboratory or as medical technologists, the Women in Medicine Club, founded last year by juniors Maryum Ahmed, Simran Modi, and Sophia Memon, helps students learn and gain experiences about medical career paths.
Women In Medicine meets every other Thursday in the SAC before school to build a community centered around possible careers in medicine for women, Becky Wittenstrom, Science Teacher and Women in Medicine Sponsor, said. The club helps members connect with guest speakers such as doctors and physical therapists, Wittenstrom added.
“Members have plenty of opportunities to ask speakers questions, which personally connects them to female professionals in the medical careers they’re interested in,” Wittenstrom said. “We encourage the girls to reach out to see if these contacts have intern or shadowing opportunities.”
The club has completed many service projects, including making and sending 50 care packages to Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) School’s womens’ shelter, Wittenstrom said. Last year, members made 80 Valentine’s Day cards for nursing home patients, Wittenstrom added.
The club is driven by a collective love for medicine and service, Memon said. It also gives members many opportunities to find a field they might enjoy, she added.
“Women in Medicine means empowerment, opportunity, and leadership,” Memon said. “It also means passion and community.”
This club has opportunities for students, such as medical simulations, going on walks for Alzheimer’s, fundraising for charity, and more, Modi said.
“We’re doing so many positive things, and it’s really great that I can teach all the young girls how to get involved in community activities that’ll help women,” Modi said.
