With time ticking away until the end of the school year, Fusion, a co-curricular acapella group, has been rehearsing furiously for their final spring concert on May 31, junior Fusion singer Lidiia Okilko said. Fusion is a composite of a multiple groups including the Soprano and Alto group, Solace, and the Tenor and Bass group, Nine.
Community is a main aspect of the spring concert, junior Fusion singer Tanner Treger, said. The concert includes celebrating seniors, who perform solos, a long-standing tradition, Treger added. Since he’s known some of the seniors since elementary school, these solos mean a lot to him, Treger explained.
“It’s really nice to be a part of their senior solos because it’s a good-bye, but it’s your last time to sing with them during the school year,” Treger said.
Junior Fusion singer Kathleen Sawyer believes concert traditions signify new generations merging with the old. At the end of every concert, Solace sings “Always” by Ben Platt while holding candles as a symbolic passing of the torch, Sawyer said.
“During this song we invite the new members to come [on stage],” Sawyer said. “We light everyone’s candles, and the seniors blow out their candles. Saying goodbye to the seniors [is] a really sweet moment.”
Even though a lot of work goes into the spring concert, it honors all the work Fusion singers have put in over the years, Robert Shellard, Fusion Director and Choir teacher, said.
“[The concert is] a great celebration of all of the work that [the singers] put forth across their four years of high school,” Shellard said. “For many of our students, this is one of the larger culminating experiences that they’ll get.”
