From spin classes to yoga sculpt to random workouts found on instagram, I have tried them all.
Growing up with older siblings who exercise often, I quickly became obsessed with that rush of endorphins that come from various workouts. However, for me it took multiple tries to find a workout I truly enjoyed.
Many gyms see an increase in numbers at the start of the year from the media’s portrayal of January being a “fresh start”. MIC, a news and commentary website, estimated that gym volumes increase by 30 to 50 percent in January, then plummet in February as 80 percent of new members clear out.
Social media has hundreds of headlines reading “12-3-30 will transform you” or “an hour of stairmaster a day will create abdominal definition”. But in reality, there is not one specific workout routine that will work for everyone. Breaking Muscle, an online fitness magazine, did a study where several groups measured cardio fitness and each person completed the same workout for six months. There was a large range of responses between an 8 percent decrease in fitness to a 30 percent improvement in fitness, according to the Breaking Muscle study.
When I first started taking workout classes, I took spin classes with my dad. I enjoyed them at first, but eventually I got bored being on a stationary bike for 45 minutes straight.
Then, I tried CorePower Yoga Sculpt and realized how much I enjoyed using weights along with cardio. Some may think the spin classes were better for me than sculpt, but in reality I went to sculpt everyday, whereas I began to dread my weekly spin class. Now that I have chosen the workout I enjoy, it makes me want to go more often leading to consistency which is crucial when creating a solid routine.
The New York Times estimates that Instagram has around 50,000 fitness influencers, all who constantly claim to have the “secret” to fitness. With the constant stream of opinions, it can be easy to get persuaded by these influencers into following their routine. While this can be a way to gain inspiration, it can easily lead to feeling overwhelmed.
The key is to try to find movement that is enjoyable rather than the newest trend.
After realizing how much I enjoyed yoga sculpt, my mindset shifted and I was excited to do it everyday. Instead of viewing exercise as a chore, I now see it as the best part of my day.
Our workout routine should be something we enjoy, not just another trend we follow.

Great article! No exercise helps if someone quits.
