The Fantasy Sports Club is a place for students to create and participate in fantasy sports leagues together, share background information on players, and give feedback on each other’s teams.
Fantasy Sports Club meets weekly on Thursdays at 7:30 a.m. in room 1514, and it already has two fantasy football leagues full of students, but they have plans to make more, Adam Clendenning, PE Teacher and club sponsor, said. Clendenning believes the club is a great way for students, both experienced and inexperienced, to get into not only fantasy sports but sports overall.
“It’s a neat opportunity to get involved in something popular,” Clendenning said. “[It] takes very little background knowledge; it can be pretty easy to join a league and have the comfort to [enjoy] it.”
Senior Will Higgins, leader of social outreach for the club, has participated in fantasy sports since eighth grade. Higgins said that fantasy football gives you the power to make your own team and pick the players you see fit and how they affect the game.
“[It’s] pretty easygoing; we just discuss the real-life statistics and then apply it to our league,” Higgins said. “We’ll talk about specific people, like if someone has [a certain] player, why they drafted them, and dive into decision making and the sports-business side of it.”
Clendenning believes fantasy sports are a fantastic way to connect with people and the sports themselves. A prime example of this is who has been able to form stronger relationships and maintain connections with his friends while becoming much more passionate and involved in football, thanks to the club.
“My goal is to get more involvement and fresh interest,” Clendenning stated. [It would] be cool to have students [that] have been doing [fantasy sports] for a while teaching other students [about fantasy sports].”
