Google’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Assistant, Gemini AI, has been disabled in Google Workspaces on school accounts run by District 225. However, Gemini remains on as a stand alone website for students and staff to use on assignments as directed by teachers or as a resource supporting a student’s needs. Gemini remaining on also provides time and space to refine the District 225 AI Guidelines with students and staff, Principal Dr. Barbara Georges explained in her weekly newsletter from May 3.
Over the past few months, Google has deeply integrated Gemini AI into Google Workspaces, including Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides, which are used by District 225 in almost every class for a variety of assignments.
The constant presence of AI in the classroom provides challenges for students and teachers to continue upholding core values of excellence in learning, responsibility, and well-being, Georges said. This decision was reached to find a balance for South’s learning environment, Georges said.
