Iran War accelerates

The two-week ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran’s three-month conflict came after President Donald Trump posted on X that “a whole civilization would die” if Iran failed to agree to a ceasefire over easter weekend, The New York Times reported.

The U.S. and Iran reached an agreement for a ceasefire on April 7, as a way to open the Strait of Hormuz; however, this was quickly violated when Israel attacked the terrorist group Hezbollah in Lebanon, causing Iran to close the strait again on April 8, The New York Times reported.

Trump’s tweet caused many lawmakers to respond with outrage, including Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker. Who responded by saying that Congress must invoke the 25th amendment, which outlines the rules and processes of impeachment for the president, The New York Times reported. Additionally, Marjorie Taylor Greene, former Republican representative, shifted her support for President Trump to criticism, arguing that the U.S. cannot kill an entire civilization and considering his post evil, The New York Times reported.

Other Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Ro Khanna (D-CA), have called to remove President Trump from office over his threats and called for impeachment, The New York Times reported.

Thus far, 13 American service members have lost their lives in the conflict, including a Minnesota mother of two and an Iowa college student, CBS News reported. Additionally, a service member is missing after their F-18E Strike Eagle was shot down over Tehran on April 3, The New York Times reported.

Local police enforce phone laws

The Glenview Police Department is increasing efforts to minimize the amount of distracted driving violations with additional police patrol. The Glenview Police Department  partnered with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the Illinois State Police, and local law enforcement, according to the IDOT, which funds this increased enforcement.

This month, increased police patrol will look out for various driving violations, such as texting, video viewing, and use of social media, while driving, according to IDOT.

Illinois law prohibits the use of hand-held devices while driving, even if the vehicle is stopped at a traffic light, IDOT said. Violators are ticketed, according to the Illinois Tollway. The best way to avoid a moving violation is turning off your cellphone before beginning to drive, pulling over if you need to make a call, asking a passenger to assist with phone use, warning other callers that you are driving, and preparing your directions before you start driving, according to the Illinois Tollway.
