Where do South students get their news?

The Oracle stopped random South students in the hallway to ask about their current events knowledge.  After each was asked the same series of questions, here’s what they said.

Do you read/watch the news regularly?
“I usually don’t, but sometimes I will read some.”

Where do you get your news? (online, newspaper, TV, social media, etc.)
“Usually news websites, I think.”

Any specific source? (NBC, Chicago Tribune, Yahoo, etc.)
“Yahoo.”

Are there any recent events you remember reading/watching that stuck out to you?
“There’s a lot that’s going on with the refugee crisis.”

Were you aware the following events occurred?

1) A Fox Lake police officer shot and killed.
“No, I haven’t heard about that.”2) A reporter and cameraman killed on TV.
“Yes.”If yes, how did you find out about this?
“I think I saw an article on a news website, I think it was it was Daily Mail that I was on.”

Do you read/watch the news?
“I do. Every time I go home from school my mom always has the news on at five.”

Where do you get your news? (online, newspaper, TV, social media, etc.)

“I’ll watch it on TV, and if I want to find out more I’ll probably go on social media and read some things on Facebook or Tumblr or something like that.”

Any specific source? (NBC, Chicago Tribune, Yahoo, etc.)

“Probably just NBC.”

Are there any recent events you remember reading/watching that stuck out to you?

“Probably when the random guy shot the two TV reporters on [the] news. That really stuck out to me because, one thing that I didn’t really agree with is that news channels were showing the footage of it happening… And that kind of shook something in me about how some people are really heartless when it comes to showing some news, and they don’t show the fact that people actually have lives, and they just show how ‘Oh, this happened. These guys got shot.’”

Were you aware the following events occurred?

1) Fox Lake police officer shot and killed
“Yeah I have… All I heard about it was [that] it was near a school and so the school was evacuated. It was actually the day that we had the drill day and I’m like ‘Oh crap, there’s a reason we do this kind of stuff.’”2) Reporter and cameraman killed on TV.
“Yes.”If yes, how did you find out about this?
“I saw it on TV.”


Julie Degidio (Senior)

Do you read/watch the news?
“I read it more than I watch it. I go on Yahoo News. Whenever I want to know something, I’ll go on there and that’s where I look at the news, usually.”

“Online.”

Are there any recent events you remember reading/watching that stuck out to you?
“The 2016 election [is what] I’ve been hearing about and that’s it.”

“I usually look it up on the Internet, on CNN.”

“Not really.”

“A lot of people were talking about it and I also saw it on a website.”

“Channel 5 and the Today Show.”

“Well I was just doing a project during consumer’s class and I was recently reading about the new iPhone 6s products.”

“I don’t know, I just heard it. It just happened.”

“I get them at Yahoo News on Facebook. It’s on my ‘wall’. I [also] really like using the Snapchat story for those newspaper reports. [I use] Snapchat Discover.”

“Syrian refugees.”
