Five Advanced Placement (AP) Art students from South, seniors Zander Brandt, Ari Doran, Hyun Park, Oona Wade, and Cameron Willis, had their works selected for the Northern Illinois Regional Art Exhibition, a state-wide art competition for the Northern Illinois area, Brandt explained.

The Northern Exhibition, one of Illinois’ largest student art exhibitions which provides opportunities to young artists to showcase their artwork, will begin on March 13 at the Bridgeport Art Center in Chicago, Art Teacher Amie Elliott said. AP Art teachers at South chose the creations that were entered, Elliott added.

“We [were] looking for work that has depth, is well-developed, fun to look at, [and] striking,” Elliott said.

A reception will be held at the Bridgeport Art Center for the competitors, teachers, and [family members] on Apr. 23, where all of the entries will be showcased and the winners will be announced, Art Teacher Stephanie Fuja said.

Elliott regards the exhibition as an important educational opportunity for art students, as students get to create and experience a variety of different art forms from different people.

“Students get to see work from different schools with different resources,” Elliott said. “It’s an amazing way to see the range of work that high school students can do.”
