Comedy Sportz is home to its members for three weeks once a year. For seniors Jeffrey Reid and Aaron Kahn, this will be the last year that they will get to take part of the group at GBS. Comedy Sportz held a show on Nov. 13 and 14 to raise money for the Caring Hearts Foundation in support for Ms. Kocian.
Though they only spend three weeks rehearsing and performing, those three weeks are spent doing hard work for extensive hours, according to Kahn.
“We put a lot of effort in to guarantee that come showtime, it will be funny and awesome,” Kahn said.
The physical aspects are not the only challenging part about Comedy Sportz, according to Reid. There is also a lot of mental preparation.
“It can be a real mental exercise,” Reid said. “Some times you need to think how to make a unpredictable scene funny. Other times you’ll need to find rhymes for a single word while trying to predict your opponent’s rhymes. Rarely you need to do the same physical activity multiple times the same way. It’s a real challenge during the whole show.”
Both Kahn and Reid have experienced the challenges of improvisation for multiple years now.
“I have been in Comedy Sportz for over half my time at GBS, and it’s been such a great experience,” Kahn said. “Comedy Sportz was something I wanted to do since third grade and finally getting to do it has been amazing.”
Kahn is an active member of the Drama Department at GBS, and Comedy Sportz is a show that really stood out to him.
“I look forward to everything about Comedy Sportz, but my favorite part is just getting to be ridiculous,” Kahn said. “I love being in an environment where I don’t have to be serious. It’s the one show I do each year where I am completely 100 percent myself in front of the audience.”
Reid can also be seen in many GBS productions. Like Kahn, he also believes Comedy Sportz is unique.
“Comedy sports is all about creating fun moments with your friends,” Reid said. “That’s exactly why I love this show.”
As their Comedy Sportz career comes to an end, they have been reflecting on their experiences. For both, the experience has been fun and memorable.
“One of my favorite memories from Comedy Sportz was getting to compete against the GBN team last year,” Kahn said. “It was really fun to go to GBN and work with different people. When I was younger, I saw the GBN vs. GBS game and being a part of it really made me proud of how far I’ve come from a little audience member to a participant.”
Reid is looking forward to performing in his last show. He hopes to continue on with Comedy Sportz in college and make more memories.
“Sure, it’s sad to think this is my last year working with these amazing people, but when all is said and done [and] the final show ends, I’ll have memories of some the best times of my life doing the thing I love,” Reid said.
Kahn shares similar feelings of excitement, but he is also bittersweet that this show is his last.
“I actually have a lot of bittersweet feelings about it being my last year,” Kahn said. “I’m super excited that I’m finally a senior, and I’ll get to be a captain of a team. However, I can’t believe it’s over. It’s really sad to say goodbye but also fun to look back at all the memories and good times it’s given me.”
