“[It is] a gift to the bands and all the students of Glenbrook South High School,” Canzoneri said.
The arrangement has filled-in harmonies and accompaniments by the high woodwinds. The piece was written for the Symphonic Band but could be adapted for the marching band, according to Canzoneri.
“Mr. Canzoneri added an interlude in the middle of the piece,” junior Will Barnard said. “Instead of playing the song once and ending, we play the song, then the interlude, and play the song again. Adding this section gives the song a more symphonic feel.”
In the new arrangement each instrument has a different part, according to Barnard. Musical additions, such as flute trills, enhance the symphonic feel of the piece.
“I wanted to dress up what actually is a very nice tune,” Canzoneri said. “Having been an alum of a high school that treasured school spirit, I wanted to make a lasting contribution to the spirit of GBS.”
Junior Demetri Kotsinis prefers the new arrangement to the old one.
“[The new arrangement] sounds like a march unlike the other arrangement,” Kotsinis said. “I believe [Canzoneri] is a quiet genius who deserves more respect.”
Along with his arrangement of the fight song, Canzoneri also modifies other songs with speed and care, according to Barnard.
“[Canzoneri’s] abilities as an arranger are invaluable to the GBS bands,” Barnard said. “When he arranged the fight song, he wrote every single part out on sheets of staff paper by hand.”
Canzoneri believes that the work put into the song is worth it.
“I will never forget the honor of having served the great students of GBS,” Canzoneri said.
