Since 2008, the Titan Learning Center (TLC) has assisted students in succeeding in a myriad of subjects, spanning from Japanese to Calculus, helping students comprehend class material fully, TLC Coordinator Joy Cooper said. In the TLC, there are student tutors, South teachers that tutor, and full-time out-of-school tutors, Cooper added.

The TLC has approximately 14,000 visits a year, granting students help for any subject. Tutors can aid you with essays, projects, practice problems, SAT/ACT prep, and more from 7:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, and 7:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays in the library.

Cooper emphasized the warm environment tutors try to create, making sure students feel comfortable getting the help they need. The TLC has provided students with a place to cope with challenging subjects, giving them a sense of security and an overall better understanding of what they are learning, Cooper expressed.

Before becoming the TLC Coordinator, Cooper taught English for 15 years, which now encourages her to help out more for English in the TLC.

“One of my goals is always to [create] a welcoming place where kids don’t feel intimidated, and they feel like they can come in and that it’s okay to admit, ‘I don’t know how to do something’,” Cooper said. “I believe that’s when learning takes place; making mistakes is when we learn.”

Although many teachers from South tutor part-time at the TLC, some tutors from outside South help full-time at the TLC. English Tutor Adam Kleiman said he joined the TLC by seeing it online.

“With a 95 percent graduation rate at South, the TLC assists many students with their essays and writing,” Kleiman said.
