The Illinois State Department of Education rejected a Trump Administration’s policy to eliminate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs, The Chicago Sun-Times reported.
State Superintendent Tony Sanders said in a letter to the U.S Department of Education that Illinois guarantees compliance with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination against programs that receive federal funding.
This letter is in response to a notice from the Department of Education asking states to certify they are following Trump’s new anti-DEI policies. If states do not comply with the notice, they are at risk of losing their Title 1 funding, The Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Money from Title 1 provides funding for low income students across the country, The Chicago Sun-Times reported. Chicago Public Schools relies on $400 million in Title 1 funding per year.
