Students show interest in classic movies

Students know the movies of today and a lot about them–but what about the select students who are into older, classic movies from many years ago?

Classic movies may not seem like something that would interest teens, but freshman Ellie Haramaras has been watching them since fifth or sixth grade.

“I was watching Turner classic movies,” she said.

Sophomore Paul Tisch is a newcomer to old movies and has been watching them for about two years now.

“I watched a couple of [classic] movies that opened this world of movies to [me],” Tisch said.

Students watch classic movies for many different reasons. Junior Allie Kahan says they make her feel better when she’s having a bad day. She enjoys the classic romance present in these films.

“[I like] the classic type of romance that isn’t [around] anymore,” Kahan said. “Now I think it’s romantic when someone sends me a winky face.”

Junior Jimmy Binder started watching classic movies because his parents’ enjoyed the movies and this sparked an interest in him. Old movies are different than movies today–from plot lines to camera angles, according to Binder.

“My parents were watching them all the time, and I just sitting with them and watching with them,” Binder said.

Junior Molly Quinn has a different outlook on classic movies.

“The plot lines are very simple, it’s not a bad simple, it’s pleasant,” Quinn said.

Compared to movies today some students seem to prefer the simplicity and antiquity of older movies.

“Today’s [movies] are trying too hard,” Binder said.

The decade of the ‘40s interested Quinn the most.

“It’s very war-timey, which I like,” Quinn said.

Kahn and Quinn share a special bond with old movies.

“I’m Audrey, she’s Marilyn, it’s been our thing,” Kahan said.

According to Haramaras, students who want to become more interested in film should look into classic movies.
