U.S. Congressman Mike Quigley (D-IL, 5th) spoke to members of The Oracle, The Etruscan, and a Civics class in the Lyceum on Friday, Feb. 28. Quigley spoke about a wide variety of topics, ranging from his upbringing as a student from Glenbard North, as well as his history in Chicago politics, and many pieces of rousing advice. He also discussed pressing national issues such as the war in Ukraine, and how people of every age should care about national conflicts, as “democracy is not a spectator sport.”
Quigley urged the students multiple times to not dismiss controversial or heavy topics with a throw away phrase like “it doesn’t affect me,” as everyone can do something about the state of the world. The younger population all have the ability to act now, and shouldn’t wait simply because they are afraid to act before finishing their schooling, he stated.
Over 70 students attended the visit, and most of what Quigley said was in response to insightful student questions posed to the Congressman.
