For as a long as I can remember, sports were at the forefront of my life.
Whether it was waking up on a cold fall morning to the anticipation of the Chicago Bears playing their division rivals the Green Bay Packers, or kicking the soccer ball around during practice, sports slowly turned from a hobby into something that defined me as a person.
As a freshman, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in sports journalism. While I was still unsure of what area of sports journalism I wanted to pursue, I decided to give broadcasting a shot and signed up for the Broadcast News and Sports class. Looking back as a graduating senior, I am confident to say that signing up for that class my freshman year was one of the best decisions I made during my high school career. While the class taught me the principles of broadcast journalism, it was the experiences that made it so memorable.
I will always remember the dusty press box at John Davis Stadium where I got to call three homecoming victories for the Titans, the early Saturday mornings where I would rant on air about how the Bears find every possible way to lose games, and the small studios where I shared lots of laughter with my classmates in addition to editing a production.
As the mic will turn off in the next few weeks, I am positive that I would not be continuing to pursue a career in sports broadcasting at The Ohio State University, if it wasn’t for all the experiences that WGBK radio provided me.
So for all the underclassmen, take advantage of every opportunity or class that is available to you because you never know where one small experience can take you.
