In Other News: Dems sweep elections

Across the country, Democrats yielded many wins on election night on November 4. Former assemblyman and Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City, Democratic Representative Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) was elected Governor of New Jersey, and Democratic Representative Abigail Spanberger  (D-VA) was elected Governor of Virginia.

These victories signal a larger victory for Democrats across the nation following President Donald Trump’s Presidential win a year ago, The New York Times reported.

All candidates pushed back against Trump’s agenda, with Spanberger’s campaign  focused on the firing of federal workers and the impact of the Government shutdown, The New York Times reported. Sherrill also frequently spoke about the importance of the Hudson River Tunnel project, which Trump wishes to eliminate, The New York Times reported.

Mamdani’s victory is especially notable, with the 34- year-old beating Independant incumbent Andrew Cuomo by 10 percent of the vote, The New York Times reported.

President Trump said that these victories were unfortunate for America, and the candidates’ victories were likely due to the climbing cost of living and fluctuating economy, The New York Times reported
