President-Elect Donald Trump was elected 47th President with 295 Electoral College votes. Trump has begun to outline his policy goals and named cabinet members in the days following his reelection.
President Trump’s campaign issues included securing the U.S.-Mexico border in hopes of stopping illegal immigration, mass deportation of illegal immigrants, ending birth-right citizenship, lowering corporate taxes, imposing high tariffs on foreign made goods, and rolling back Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts around the country, AP News reported, all important issues to the Republican Party, and their voters.
Additionally, Trump has named Elon Musk and presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the Department of Government Efficiency, a soon-to-be-created department promising to help decrease excess expenditures by the U.S. government, CNN reported.
“Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my administration to dismantle government bureaucracy,” Trump said in a statment. “[They will] slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies.”
Trump did not win in traditionally Democratic states such as California, Colorado, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont, AP News reported.
Trump lost Illinois with 54.1 percent of voters choosing Harris, 44.5 percent of voters choosing Trump, and 1.4 percent of voters choosing independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., AP News said. However, this is a 4 percent increase for Trump in Illinois since the 2020 election, CBS News reported.
Illinois’s Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker promised to defend Illinois citizens from Trump’s harsh policies, NBC News reported.
“To anyone who intends to come take away the freedom, opportunity, and dignity of Illinoisans, I would remind you that a happy warrior is still a warrior,” Pritzker said at a press conference. “You come for my people; you come through me.”
Trump thanked the American people and promised to protect them at his victory rally on election night.
“I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor of being elected your 47th president and your 45th president,” Trump said at his victory rally on election night. “I will fight for you, for your family and your future, every single day I will be fighting for you with every breath in my body. I will not rest until we have delivered the strong, safe, and prosperous America that our children deserve and that you deserve. This will truly be the golden age of America.”
