Invisible Children, a not-for-profit organization, released “KONY 2012”, a 30-minute video about Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) March 5.
Kony is the leader of the LRA in Uganda, and they kidnap children and use them as soldiers, forced laborers and sex slaves.
According to king5.com, the LRA is a self-proclaimed Christian force and Kony claims he is a “voice for the spirits”.
In “KONY 2012”, Invisible Children strives to make Kony famous. According to Invisible Children, “if people know about the crimes that Kony has been committing for 26 years, they will unite to stop him.”
STAND sponsor Matthew Whipple feels that while Invisible Children is promoting a serious problem, there are more Ugandan issues that must be addressed.
“The real problem with northern Uganda today, where this whole problem started with the LRA, is that there is still poverty,” Whipple said. “There are still refugees. There are still people without good sources of drinking water and sufficient opportunities to go to school. That’s the real issue.”
According to LA Times, the “KONY 2012” received more than 58 million views within four days of its release.
“My fear is that in a week, everyone is going to be like, ‘Yeah, right [Kony] he is terrible, that was last week,’” Whipple said. “[…] Wait for somebody to do a film of their cat filming an emergency message for aid to Burma and that will be the next issue.”
