What is not to love about the exhilaration of going skiing or snowboarding? The thrill of feeling the wind in your face while carving down the mountain or getting airborne while going off a jump draws people of all ages to the slopes. What doesn’t draw people, especially South students, to the ski hills in Wisconsin are the price and lengthy trips to get there.
Hence, Slopes was formed and founded by Alex Vondersitt and John Schurer. According to Vondersitt, these specific logistics prevented many South students from venturing up north to ski or snowboard. Vondersitt said that Slopes was created to provide South students with access to a ski hill and discounted prices.
“When we go with a group of 20 kids or more, we get a discount and it is about 15 dollars cheaper per person,” Vondersitt said. “And we get the transportation by bus.”
Slopes went to Alpine Valley on February 14, and stayed for over eight hours, according to Vondersitt.
“Unfortunately it was very cold,” Vondersitt said. “[But,] it was a really fun trip and everyone who went had a lot of fun.
Sophomore Harrison Kane was one of the students who attended this trip. According to Kane, not only was the weather frigid, but amusingly windy.
“It was so cold and windy that some of the smaller kids were […] blown up the mountain,” Kane said. “They would try to go and ski down the mountain, and the wind would actually push them backward up the slopes.”
Slopes was only able to have one ski trip this year, according to Vondersitt.
“We started the club late in the winter, and [February 14] was the only date that me, Schurer and both the sponsors were available,” Vondersitt said. “Also, the resorts close [in] early March.”
Vondersitt claims that in the years to come, Slopes will take more than one trip to the slopes.
