Every year, mathematicians celebrate the day 3/14 in honor of pi, Slurpee fanatics enjoy free drinks on 7/11, and chemists applaud Amedeo Avogadro for discovering the mole on 10/23 between 6:02 a.m. and 6:02 p.m. Popularized by the group of almost two million facebookers, “most epic wish ever (11/11/11 at 11:11)”, South students anticipate the one day of the century where all the digits in the day, month, and year are all the same number: Nov. 11, 2011, more commonly known as 11/11/11. The Oracle compiled a list of opinions, plans, and superstitions for this day.
Skrillex Concert:
Dubstep DJ Skrillex will perform at Congress Theater in Chicago Nov. 11.
Senior Jordan Synnestvedt, who will be celebrating her 18th birthday, plans to attend.
“I think just because the day is 11/11/11, it’s especially lucky,” Synnestvedt said. “I’m really, really obsessed with dubstep. […] The fact that it’s my birthday, a fun day already, it’s exciting that [with everything] put together [the day] will be awesome.”
Junior Will Gould will also be attending.
“We have the day off because it’s Veterans’ day, so I’m excited for a good ending to an already solid day,” he said. “I’m really excited because he’s one of my favorite DJs and I think it will be a lot of fun.”
While Gould does not plan on religiously checking his phone to make the 11:11 wish on this day, he feels that if he does make a wish he will be more “hyped up” than he would normally be.
“It’s pretty much a
perfect day, more or less. I don’t imagine how it could get much better,” Gould said.
Wishful Wedding:
Come Nov. 11, junior Grace Ludwig will be in Phoenix, AZ celebrating the marriage of her uncle.
“I don’t know a specific reason why [he chose to have it on 11/11/11] but probably because it’s a significant day,” Ludwig said. “It’s also probably very easy for him to remember, so then he can remember the anniversary.”
Ludwig and her family are very excited for this special day.
“First of all it’s a wedding, and that’s always fun,” Ludwig said. “But it’s also on such a cool day and I’m glad that I have something to do on that day. […] It will be something I remember for a long time.”
Ludwig most likely plans to make a wish at 11:11 on that day, but is not sure exactly what she will wish for.
“[The wish] would be a lot more special because I’d be with my family at my uncle’s wedding,” she said.
Another exciting event for Ludwig is that her cousin’s baby is due 11/11/11. According to Ludwig, it will be the first great grand child in her family.
“I’m really excited to not only have a baby cousin, but he or she will have such a cool birthday that none of us will ever forget,” Ludwig said.
Senior Charley Tisch: “At 11:11 a.m., I filled up a quarter of my gas tank in my car and the price came out to $11.11. Weird.”
Senior Jordan Synnestvedt: “Every 11:11 I make a wish. I count down on the clock in school. […] When I look at my phone and it’s 11:11, I kiss my phone 11 times [for] extra luck.”
Junior Will Gould: “Before my girlfriend and I started going out, every night at 11:11 I would wish that she would say yes when I asked her out. Later when I was talking to her about it, [I found out] she was wishing [at 11:11] that I would ask her out.”
Senior Logan Walovitch:
“[11/11/11] will be epic. I have a superstition about the number 11. […] My alarm clock time has to have digits that add up to 11. [For example], 6:23.”
Senior Anna Hirsch: “I was born on 11/11, 1993. It’s interesting because my mom picked my birthday since I was a planned C-section baby. She didn’t even mean to make it 11/11, but it turned out to be a convenient date. I was born three minutes off from 11:11. You never know, someone’s clock probably said 11:11.”
Senior Jreis Sweilem: “Something big will happen [on 11/11/11]. […] I wished the night before wrestling conference [at 11:11] to win my first match, and I did.”
