Harmonies echoed through South while choir groups warmed up for this year’s choir preview concert, which showcases the hard work behind South’s choir ensembles, Choral Director Robert Shellard said.
The annual Co-Curricular Preview Concert, held Nov. 24 in the Lyceum, brings together South’s four co-curricular choir ensembles: Chamber Singers, Fusion, Scat That, and Da Capo, Shellard said.
The concert was created three years ago when the choir directors realized students needed a fall performance dedicated specifically to all the co-curricular choirs, Shellard said. The choir class often performs together, but co-curricular groups rarely meet in class and hence do not often performs together, Shellard explained.
In this preview concert, however, students are doing two to five songs, and can feel the presence of a real audience which helps them gain confidence, something they cannot fully develop during classroom rehearsals alone, Shellard said.
“We’ve got something to look forward to—to build towards a goal,” Shellard said. “It really jump starts us for the rest of the year.”
Preformances other than the Preview Concert performed by the community by the choir ensemble are also well-received, Keira Read, Chamber Singers Section Leader, Da Capo Member and Assistant Director of Scat That, said. Community visits include caroling at different locations in Glenview.
“It’s great to see people so happy to hear music throughout the community, the hospital, and retirement homes,” Read said.
More than that, she hopes the audience will take a little joy away from this preview concert, Read said.
“I hope each person in audience can find a song that they enjoy because we have such different styles between different groups,” Read said.
