The Students for Human Rights club (SFHR) has begun preparing for this year’s annual Jamnesty, an event featuring student performances and a focus on supporting humanitarian causes, Matt Whipple, SFHR sponsor and Social Studies Teacher, said.
SFHR hosts fundraisers for human rights causes throughout the year, Whipple explained. Money raised from Jamnesty will be donated to the International Red Cross, an organization dedicated to assisting victims of armed conflict, Whipple said. Jamnesty, which will be held on April 5, is SFHR’s last fundraising event until the fall since the club understands that most people have already donated to a cause this year, Whipple explained.
“By the time we get to May, everybody has donated to something already and you can’t go to the same person every time and ask for a donation,” Whipple said. “There are all these clubs around the school, and they all are raising money for good things, but [donors] pockets are only so deep, there’s only so much they have. So, [SFHR] has to be careful about how much we try to fundraise ourselves.”
On the day of Jamnesty, the preparations will include constructing the stage and setting up the sound system, sophomore SFHR president Aleeza Khan said.
Raising money through Jamnesty allows students to assist human rights battles around the globe, Whipple said.
“We don’t have the luxury of going to Ukraine, Israel, or Gaza [to help],” Whipple said. “At a minimum, I would like [raise money at Jamnesty] to send our resources to help those who are there.”
