“Make sure you start with a freshly cleaned and moisturized face,” senior Dahee Will explains on her tutorial, “Quick School Makeup for Teens”.
This video on YouTube has earned 400,700 views on its own.
After a year of creating videos, Will has over 20,000 subscribers and over 3,000,000 views on her videos.
Her YouTube account has 18 videos, which include, “How to Color Your Hair at Home”, and “The BEST Summer Fragrances”, and date back to two years ago. However, according to Will, her love for beauty started right around when junior high began.
She transferred from Rolling Meadows High School to South last year.
“I started getting good at [makeup] probably freshman year or so,” Will said. “That’s when I really started my channel.”
According to Dahee’s sister, sophomore Minji Will, she goes to Dahee for any makeup tips since she isn’t specifically interested in beauty.
“If she wasn’t my sister, I probably wouldn’t know anything [about makeup],” Minji said.
Every day, according to Minji and Dahee, they go into each others’ rooms and talk about their day. For Minji’s freshman homecoming, Dahee did her makeup.
According to senior Kaylee Sherman, she has become a close friend of Dahee’s through cheerleading team-bonding and being in the same stunt group. Sherman is never hesitant to ask if her makeup looks okay.
“We were getting ready for one of the football games and I said, ‘Dahee, can you look at my makeup? Is it okay?’ and she said, ‘It’s fine,’” Sherman said. “And she was telling me little things.”
According to Minji, she sometimes finds herself talking about Dahee’s videos with a few people, but her friends never really talk about them.
“Sometimes, people [say], ‘I didn’t know your sister was successful on making YouTube videos’,” Minji said.
Dahee’s YouTube account, DAHEEyum, has gained a total of 22,798 subscribers and 3,453,246 video views since she uploaded her first video. Her last video, however, was put up seven months ago.
According to Dahee and Sherman, her videos never had any big effect on her academics, cheerleading or personality.
“Dahee’s always been great at school,” Sherman said. “She’s still a really funny person […] and she has a great group of friends, so I don’t think anything’s changed.”
According to Dahee, having 22,798 subscribers isn’t overwhelming. She used to have 35,000 subscribers. She also has uploaded over 100 videos and has deleted them because she feels they weren’t a good portrayal of her anymore since she doesn’t look or act how she did.
Dahee has received comments from her subscribers saying how they are upset with her for not having posted in seven months. According to Dahee, they have every right to be mad at her, and she is happy that the subscribers that have stayed subscribed are still there.
“I want to keep it up, it’s just […] I don’t feel very inspired to do it,” Dahee said. “I don’t feel like it’s really me anymore.”
According to Dahee, she doesn’t let negative comments from her viewers get to her.
“Whatever you do, not everyone’s going to like you,”Dahee said.
When Dahee was still making videos, she always made time in her schedule to film them.
“I always wanted to do them, so I always made the time,” Dahee said. “I think you can make the time for anything you want to do.”
