Soccer reflects on season after regional loss

The women’s soccer team ended their season on May 23 to Hersey in the regional game with a score of 1-3. According to junior forward Olivia Peters, the end of the season made her realize the reality of losing their talented senior players, but  she’s looking forward to seeing the progression of the team next spring.

“Every year, high school sports are different,” Peters mentioned. “You never know what’s going to be thrown at you; our team definitely made the best of what we were given.”

While she is optimistic about next season, she still reflects on the disappointment she felt after losing their last game.

“I was really sad because that was the last game I got to play with those seniors,” Peters said. “I tried to embrace the moment even though we lost [by] trying to remember all of the good times that we’ve had with them.”

According to Peters, she has notable chemistry with senior Kaily Bruch and connected on at least 10 corner kicks throughout the course of their season.

The Titans held the lead throughout the first half of the game with a score of 1-0. The goal came from Bruch with an assist from Peters.

“It was important in this game for us to score first to try and set a tempo,” Bruch said. “I think we played a really strong first half.”

While the team controlled the first half, soon after the second half began, the Titans trailed behind Hersey when the score was 1-3. According to junior defender Anne Brennan, the Titans came out very strong in the first half, which resulted in their loss of energy going into the final minutes of the game. However, Brennan noted that this did not affect the team’s overall efforts even when they were down by two goals.

“Throughout that entire second half we really did stay positive and tried as hard as we could,” Brennan noted. “Even though we knew we were going to lose with 30 seconds left, we still fought as hard as we could for every ball.”

According to Peters, during the regular season the Titans faced many obstacles such as injuries and illnesses. Moreover, in this last game, key players senior Tami Urlich and junior Rosemary Maher both sat on the sidelines with a torn ACL and hamstring, respectively. In addition, sophomore forward Lily Sands battled strep throat throughout the game, which affected the Titans’ offense.

“I really wanted to work hard to show them that we could do it, that their support helps so much and that it meant so much,” Brennan said.

Looking towards the future, Peters noted that one area where the team can improve on is their collective level of fitness.

“I hope that next year, with me being a senior, I can help lead the off-season training in the winter where we can hopefully get a good amount of people [to improve our fitness],” Peters said. “[Then] when we start training in the spring time we can focus on our actual game [for the season and] rather than trying to get fit.”
