As anyone who goes to Glenbrook South can tell you, this is a very special year. It is the 50th anniversary of our dear school, As anyone who goes to Glenbrook South can tell you, this is a very special year.
It is the 50th anniversary of our dear school, but there is another special birthday right around the corner that not that many people know about. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of Glenbrook South’s radio station, WGBK.
I, being the observant person I am, have noticed that many don’t fully appreciate WGBK. Only 22 percent of the students surveyed knew that this is WGBK’s thirtieth. I am going to give you a great gift: the gift of seeing what your life would be without WGBK. Just consider me your Angel Second Class, and we’ll start our journey.
You are now in a world in which WGBK 88.5 FM Glenview doesn’t exist. In its place is WRLM rockin’ light music for the elderly. You might be thinking to yourself, “So what? It’s just one station. Nothing else has changed.” But you are dead wrong.
To begin, why don’t you check your MP3 player for some of your favorite bands, like The Fray? For all we know, it might not be there. You see, The Fray got their start Glenbrook South’s own WGBK. WGBK was one of the few stations to play The Fray’s songs when they were just starting out.
And what about Steve Levitan, executive producer and writer for the ABC comedy Modern Family? His time on the radio led him to discover the joys of writing. What began as a job writing scripts for public service announcements and promotions turned into a passion for writing that eventually created a hit ABC sitcom.
If that doesn’t convince you, maybe looking around the halls of GBS will. The color of the school has faded, and everyone inside looks lost and hopeless. You see, WGBK radio revitalized and spread school spirit, especially with the people who could not make it to sporting games. (If you couldn’t make it to the games, you could listen on WGBK 88.5 FM Glenview or Online at gbsradio.com)
The hopelessness of GBS can also be blamed on the lack of promotion of clubs and activities. You see, WGBK helped to promote many of the clubs people enjoy via productions called promotions. Without promotions, many of GBS’s most successful clubs, such as Key club or Walking club, would have fizzled out because of lack of popularity.
WGBK has also made Glenbrook South a safer place. Without WGBK’s wide range of public service announcements, many students might have fallen victim to kidnapping or falling vending machines. The injury rate among GBS students would have skyrocketed if these PSA’s were never played.
You see, WGBK really has given students a much improved life. The music you listen to, television shows you watch, and the spirit of Glenbrook South all depend on radio. It just goes to show, you should not underestimate the power of one high school radio station. And remember, no man is poor who has friends, as long as he listens to WGBK 88.5 FM Glenview.
