South students compete in various races for personal fulfillment

At South there are students that like to run or participate in a variety of different races including charity runs, 5K runs, 10K runs, and more.

Senior Alexandra Arnold said she is currently training for a half marathon that she plans to run with her mother. According to Arnold, she and her mother have been preparing the last several weeks for a race in Texas this February.

“It was a random [thought] that turned into a fun idea that we’re doing,” Arnold said.

According to Arnold, she runs to relieve stress and because her whole family runs. She trains by running four days a week and adding a mile each weekend.

“[I train because I want] the satisfaction of working towards this goal and knowing I completed what I set out to do,” Arnold said.

Junior Eleni Trapp said she often runs in the Corerra de los Muertos in Pilsen, Chicago in October to celebrate Day of the Dead. According to Trapp, the race is a 5K and awards top place finishers with sugar skulls.

“[The Corerra de los Muertos has] decorations everywhere that are really colorful, and everyone’s dressed up in Mexican clothing and a bunch of people have their faces painted, and there’s a costume contest every year and some people run in Halloween costumes,” Trapp said.

According to Trapp she wants to try the Grape Stomp race, Hot Chocolate run, Zombie run, or other fun races.

“5Ks are always really appealing because they’ve got a theme to them […] and they’ve all got unique themes,” Trapp said.

Another South student Junior Jordan Arrigo participated in the Susan G. Komen 5K Race.

“I would definitely recommend running the Komen run to others because it was really fun and for an awesome cause,” Arrigo said.

According to Arrigo, she also volunteered at the Glenview Rotary Club Chase the Bear run. Arrigo recalled how she had directed runners along the course and cheered for them along the way.

“I really liked when we were walking back [after the race] and it was pouring rain, but all of the runners said thank you for coming and helping” Arrigo said.

Arrigo reported that she definitely wants to participate in a future race too.

“I really like that [there are races] for a good cause and that [they’re] usually raising money for important charities.” Arrigo said.
