Each year, several students leave town over winter break, but many students also stay home during the holidays. The Oracle has compiled a list of the Top 10 Things for students staying home to do during their winter break.
1. Winter WonderFest at Navy Pier- Each year, Navy Pier hosts the Winter WonderFest, which is home to many holiday themed rides and attractions such as cookie decorating, musical entertainment, and an ice skating rink.
2. Ski or Snowboard at Alpine Valley- If you’re bored of staying in town, grab some friends and head to Alpine Valley in Southeastern Wisconsin and spend the day skiing or snowboarding.
3. Ice Skate in Millennium Park- Every winter, Millennium Park in Chicago sets up an ice rink behind the Bean that reflects the lights of the city.
4. Wonderland Express at the Botanic Gardens- During the holiday season, the Chicago Botanic Gardens creates a miniature version of the city made from all natural materials with a train winding throughout the scene. There are also holiday-themed tours available during this time of year.
5. Holiday Magic at Brookfield Zoo- Each year, Brookfield Zoo presents the largest local holiday light festival. The display includes an 18-foot tall snowman and over 430 decorated trees lining the zoo.
6. Sledding- This is a classic winter break activity. Grab some friends and some sleds and head to one of the many local sled hills such as Johns Park or Wood Oaks Green Sledding Hill in Northbrook.
7. Holiday Shopping- With the holidays right around the corner, it’s hard not to think about what kind of presents you will be giving to family and friends. If you’re still not sure what to give for the holidays, head to one of the local malls for some holiday shopping!
8. See the City Lights- In addition to the several lights that are placed around Chicago, Macy’s on State Street also sets up a display each year that depicts many holiday themed stories.
9. Secret Santa- Another fun thing to do with friends is a secret santa. Exchanging present anonymously with friends is a great way to celebrate the holidays!
10. Holiday Movie Night- Sometimes, the best way to get in the holiday spirit is to cuddle up with some hot cocoa and watch some of the holiday classics, like A Christmas Story or Home Alone.
