Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, died of a stroke on April 21 after 12 years as pope.
Viewing of the body began on April 23 at St. Peter’s Basilica, with the date of his official funeral still unknown, The New York Times said. The Pope will likely have a very simple funeral, The New York Times said. The process for selecting a new pope will likely begin 15 to 20 days after his death, The New York Times said.
To select the new pope, Catholic cardinals under the age of 80 will gather in the Sistine Chapel to cast secret votes, and a two-thirds majority vote is needed to elect the pope, The New York Times reported.
After the funeral and during the selection process, the College of Cardinals will act as one pope; however, they cannot make any major decisions, The New York Times said.
Francis is credited with making the church more inclusive by giving women more leadership roles, accepting same-sex couples, and reaching out to religious leaders from other faiths, The New York Times said.
