Lacrosse looking to make impact in playoffs

The varsity women’s lacrosse team has fought their way to a 10-5 overall record this year despite a young roster.

“[We’ve gotten] really great production [from younger players],” head coach Anne Lesch said.

According to Lesch, the team’s biggest win so far was against Oak Park River Forest.

South’s toughest loss, however, came at the hands of Hinsdale Central April 9 by a score of 12-8, according to Lesch.

“We led at times in the first half, and we beat ourselves with fouls on defense,” Lesch said.

Senior attacker Molly Holden echoed that sentiment and noted that penalties have been something the team has struggled with.

“Right now, we’re a little check crazy, and we’ve been getting called on that a lot,” Holden said.

Jackie Leibrandt, senior midfielder and captain, felt her team has actually benefited from getting to know the new players.

“I think we work really well together for a team that is so young; we have a bunch of new girls,” Leibrandt said. “We’ve done a lot to get to know each other off the field and that has helped us with our chemistry on the field.”

This year’s team, which features six underclassmen, is still feeling some things out, according to Lesch.

“We’re still getting to know each other,” Lesch said.

South’s toughest opponents left on the schedule are Lake Forest (10-1) and Barrington (6-5), according to Lesch.

“We said at the beginning of the year we wanted to end top four in state,” Lesch said. “We still want to do that.”
