Going against the social “norm” in order to stand by one’s beliefs can be a difficult thing to do. High school is often identified as a time where peer pressure can affect decision-making and trying to “fit in” is the preferred route, as it is, generally, the easiest.
Yet, this past season, several of South’s athletes have juggled participating in athletics while practicing Ramadan, a month-long period of fasting from sunrise to sunset. The Oracle Editorial Board would like to acknowledge these instances in which individual integrity has overcome social obstacles.
Not only does The Oracle recognize the sheer stamina involved with observing Ramadan and continuing in a sport, but we would like to commend these students for maintaining their values despite difficulties that may occur within other aspects of their lives.
Also worth noting is that these athletes handled the task of fasting during athletic practice responsibly, by talking to South’s trainers and taking a break when needed.
These Ramadan-observing athletes are one example of people who have persisted with their personal values—regardless of expectations that may arise from other parts of their lives—and been able to shape their own path by making their beliefs and passions work together.
In the spirit of these steadfast athletes, The Oracle is encouraging students to stand by their principles no matter how others may view it. The commitment of these athletes, to their religion and sport, is surely one that is admirable and one that we can all aim to follow.
