Prince Harry’s immature antics tarnish royal family’s name

I was driving to school with my little brother a few weeks ago, and we were listening to a typical trashy radio station when the MC started talking about the debacle between Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Bynes. The underlying question – who is the bigger train wreck? It turns out that Lohan had hit a pedestrian and fled the scene. Bynes smoking pot in her car, Lohan hitting someone, these idiocies come as no surprise. To be honest, it’s what I expect from them.

Celebrities have become notorious for doing incredibly stupid and chaotic things. From Britney hitting paparazzi with an umbrella to Michael Phelps hitting a bong, the tabloids go crazy over the antics of these celebs. Recently the tabloids have focused on a whole other category of “celebrities,” a category that I would never expect these rash incidents from. None other than the royal family.

In August, His Royal Highness Prince Harry of Wales was photographed in a Las Vegas hotel room with a female playing strip billiards. The story made international news and even the cover of People magazine.

He doesn’t deserve to be exploited by tabloids in this way, but he chose to accept this life and to represent his family every day. I’m not asking for him to be a perfect little choir boy, but he can at least act like an idiot away from backstabbing friends with camera phones.

Unlike other trashy celebs and despite past incidents, it came as a surprise to the population to see the prince and third successor to the throne in such a compromising position. Perhaps it came as a surprise because Prince Harry isn’t really a celebrity, but something more?

Since the day Harry was born, he’s been in the spotlight. His grandmother is the queen of England for Pete’s sake. When Harry leaves his palace, the whole world watches.

Yes, he’s a 28 year-old bachelor. Yes, he is human, and as humans we make mistakes. It’s not like he killed someone or got a DUI. He played strip pool in a private hotel room.

However, he can’t make these errors, whether he likes it or not. Obviously when you go to a private hotel, you put your guard down. You’re not in the public eye.

Once again, that’s what distinguishes Harry from your average hotel guest. He’s always in the public eye, and he should realize that by now.

He was born into this role as a prince. He didn’t ask for this spotlight, but I don’t think that gives him the right to disrespect his grandmother. He clearly prospers from his grandmother’s power and has made the decision to accept the life he was given.

He’s a legal adult, yet continues to act for his family. For example, fulfilling his duties at the closing Olympic ceremony this summer. Despite having little power or responsibility, he does represent the Queen every day of his life.

Harry has done a lot of positive things in his life. He’s a philanthropist, a Captain in the military, and from what I’ve read, a pretty nice guy. Yet, he continues to jeopardize his image and his family’s good name by making stupid decisions.
