Urban students create finalist project

Sophomores Lexie Whisler, Katie Rossman and Taylor Thomas were chosen as finalists to compete at the regional level of the Chicago Metro History Fair at Niles North Feb. 25.

According to Daniel Rhoades, Urban Studies teacher, all three students created trifold posters of the topic in his Urban Studies class and were chosen from 220 other GBS students to compete at Niles North.

“There are about 100 projects at the Niles competition, which is our regional fair, and then from there, there is the city wide fair,” Rhoades said. “If our students advance they once again compete against a hundred or more projects from throughout the Chicagoland area.”

Whisler’s project was on the prohibition era as well as the reactions to the topic.

“I was really interested in the subject, and I had a lot of information and good sources,” Whisler said. “It’s something I never really learned about before, so that’s why I picked it.”

Whisler was the only one out of the three finalists from South to advance onto the Metro High School Finals.

“I’m excited about [the Metro High School Finals],” Whisler said. “I’m kind of nervous because I know that the competition is going to be a lot more intense […].”

The Chicago Metro History Fair is set to take place on Tuesday, April 10.
