Latino students shine at Summit

GBS Latino students attended the tenth annual Latino Summit Nov. 18 at Harper College.

According to Socorro Rogers, GBS Latino Summit representative, Latino Summit consists of about 40 GBS freshman and sophomore Latino students, along with students from 12 neighboring high schools. The program educates students about post-high school education and career opportunities.

At the event, students listened to speakers’ success stories. Molly McBride, GBS Latino Summit Representative, felt the panels allowed the students to dream big.

“If they haven’t had a role model in their life, maybe they can look up to someone who told a story that sounds similar to theirs and they may be feeling hopeless, but look what this person who was in the same situation has done with their life,” McBride said.

Latino Summit awards a $500 college scholarship to a senior student from each participating high school.

According to Rogers, scholarships recipients are chosen based on three essay questions, GPA, standardized testing scores, types of courses students are enrolled in and documentation status.

This year, senior Andrea Huerta received the scholarship and senior Ledya Ramos received special recognition.

“Since middle school, I really knew what I wanted, so I knew what I had to do, because I know some people start working hard […] junior year and I know you’re not going to get anywhere if you do that,” Huerta said.
