Junior Jeffery Mathew won the student body presidential election on March 15 as the he along with the student body heard his name revealed on the announcements at 3:15 p.m. According to Mathew, it was a nerve-racking experience having to wait all day for his name to be called.
Mathew didn’t expect to win the student body election, but he believes his success comes from the help of others. People who mostly helped him were Johnny O’Gara and Melanie McNulty.
“My main helpers were Johnny O’Gara for suggesting the giant head idea to me, and Melanie McNulty for introducing me to Twitter and helping me get my name out there” Mathew said.
McNulty also help Mathew get his name out to South’s student body through Facebook.
“So many people changed their Facebook profile pictures, made statuses, tweeted, and talked to their friends for me and my campaign,” Mathew said.
Mathew explained that a student body president helps out with Homecoming and many other events at South. They also help out during their lunch periods by having meetings with the principal and other board members.
According to Mathew, anyone can be student body president. They just have to plan for the task. For Mathew, the hardest part was winning the election. He predicts that the easiest part will be doing everything he can as student body president.
Mathew was very skeptical about winning as the competition was tough and almost even. Mathew was up against juniors Chris Coleman, Taylor Thomas, and Peter Campbell.
Mathew thanks his friends and family for the all the support.
